Pinch hitting opener Swapnil Asnodkar

09 Sep, 2008

Goa batsman and IPL champions Rajasthan royals opener Swapnil Asnodkar has been given a call to the India A team for the tri series against Australi A and  New Zealand A. In an interview with the Times of India he said that he had expected this call since he had a very good IPL series. He also clarified that he wanted to be known to be known to everyone as a world class batsman and not as only a T20 specialist. Can this pinch hitting opener make this call count? Only time can give us an answer.

Olympics part 2

21 Aug, 2008

The lighting of the torch, too, was smart. The long scroll of Chinese history and the long race of the Chinese people culminating up to this moment are quite touching. And the crowning achievement for that segment: showing the videos of the torch relay around the world, and putting to shame those who protested during the relays. While they were hurling hatred at China, the Chinese were collecting video to show the inclusion and common togetherness of all humanity. That the Olympics are for the world and world played a part in the arrival of these Olympics. There were also many surprises, however, which definitely bucked the propagandistic trend, though they could have simply been propaganda for domestic–rather than foreign–consumption. And the Chinese could be dually applauded and scrutinized for them. To start off with the drummers, Awesome would be the term to describe them–both the modern and old connotations. The countdown from ten in both Arabic and Chinese numerals, was poignant, one of several features which boldly reminded people that China has been a developed and advanced nation longer than any other surviving one, and that there’s a reason why there was a West. Because there was a matching East and China traditionally was the main player in the East.

India level series

20 Aug, 2008

India fought hard to get to a meagre 143 which was the target set to the Indian by Sri Lanka owing to a good bowling attack by Zaheer Khan(4-21) and Praveen Kumar(3-34). Sri Lankans were bowled out for 142 in 38.3 overs. India started their innings with Irfan Pathan going out cheaply for 5. Raina soon departed for 1. Yuvraj(20), Kohli(37), Dhoni(39)and Badrinath(27) held the innings together and made sure that India reaches the target in 39.4 overs with 3 wickets in hand.

Mendis continues to torment Indians

18 Aug, 2008

Surely the word ‘Mendis’ will strike fear among the players in the Indian dressing room and I, for one, wouldn’t want to be in their shoes now. The team has no clue to his ‘carrom’ ball release and succumbed to his bowling yet again. Indians put up a below par performance and scored a humble 146 runs in the first ODI. Sri lankans, whose batting is as good as their bowling licked up the Indian bowling attack with ease.

Murali and Mendis are still a mystery, waiting to be unravelled. I don’t know how long the players are going to take to attack them, but I sure wish that should happen soon. It is not a good sign for the players to surrender meekly to a puppet boy’s bowling.

Phelps Numero Uno

17 Aug, 2008

Phelps scored yet another gold, taking his total tally of gold medals to 8, in the Beijing olympics 4×100 m relay and broke Mark spitz’s 36 year old record. Asked how he felt by breaking the record, he said “Records are meant to be broken, no matter how large it is and who set it”. How true…

Mark spitz congratulated phelps for the phenomenal achievement and urged many youngsters to give importance to swimming. Phelps is ‘THE MAN’ in swimming, just like Usain bolt is ‘THE MAN’ in athletics.

Usain (Thunder) Bolt - Fastest homo sapien

16 Aug, 2008

August 16th, 2008 is a memorable day for Jamaica. The Beijing Olympics found a gold medal  winner in 100 m final, and Jamaica can safely claim that a Jamaican named Usain Bolt is the fastest living homo sapien in this planet. As the name suggests, he ran like a lightning bolt shot from the sky and completed 100 meters in 9.69 seconds, followed by Trinidadian with 9.89 seconds. That is one huge lead! Asafa powell disappointed and Tyson gay never even made it to the finals.

So the better man is Usain bolt for another 4 years from now. Well, one needs to think about the plight of India and an Indian. When will an Indian step into 100 m final? I do hope it will happen by 2020 (According to our Honorable Ex-President Abdul Kalam).

Euro 2008 Semifinals Matches

28 Jun, 2008

Football is always a simple game. No confusions, fuss, rules etc. Simple tactic. Guide the ball with your foot, score a goal by outwitting the opposition. That was the case with the second semifinal match. Spain simply pounded the Russians 3-0 to make it to the final. However, Germany couldn’t win as effectively as Spain, with Turkey having effectively scored equalizers for goals by Bastian Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose, and the match was heading towards extra time. But Germany managed to oust Turkey out of the tournament, thanks to last minute goal from Philip Lahm

Results:

Germany bt Turkey 3-2
Spain bt Russia 3-0

Final : Germany vs Spain and it is going to be one rocking thriller!
